Mix cake as directed. Pour half into greased and floured 13"x9” cake pan. Bake 15 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.
Mix milk, caramels, butter and salt and melt in double boiler over low heat. Pour mixture over cake, sprinkle nuts over top and pat down. Pour remaining cake batter over top and bake at 250° for 20 minutes, then at 350° for 10 minutes - total of 30 minutes. Cool and cut into squares.
Serve with whipped cream if desired.
